LOVA’s International Summer School 2012: Power & Ethnography

Objective

We aim to teach and train you in ethnographic research methods. The LOVA International Summer School brings students and life–long learners in touch with new anthropological perspectives on gender studies and a network of gender-scholars. The approach during interactive workshops is hands-on. We want to stimulate critical thinking and discussions with your fellow participants and tutors. Through short field trips you will gain knowledge of the culture and history of Amsterdam. International students and students from the Netherlands will be guided by researchers who share their passion for ethnography. No better discipline than anthropology to get to know and understand the world around you. The intellectual, warm and friendly atmosphere provides a weeklong relaxed learning experience.

The Venue

Lova poster Summer School-2012 def PRINT2The LOVA ISS will be hosted in the historical city centre of Amsterdam. It will take place at CEDLA, the Centre for Latin-American Research and Documentation (www.cedla.uva.nl), located at Keizersgracht no. 395-397 (see picture below). The CEDLA is part of the University of Amsterdam, which was founded in 1632 and is now one of Europe’s largest research universities. CEDLA provides the LOVA ISS with classrooms as well as a leisure garden and free Internet access.

CEDLA is easily reachable by public transport, located centrally on the Amsterdam ‘canal belt’. It is a seven-minute tram-ride from Amsterdam Central Station, from which trains are going to the airport and the beach in twenty minutes. Though public transport is relatively cheap, it’s a whole lot nicer to get around by bike or foot.
